The digital landscape is constantly evolving, and Google, being a household name, strives to meet users’ needs and expectations. However, recent Reddit blackouts have revealed user dissatisfaction with the search experience. Recognizing the importance of addressing these concerns, Google executives have unveiled a new feature called Perspectives. In this article, we will explore how Google aims to enhance the search experience, particularly in light of the Reddit blackout protests.

When prominent Reddit forums went dark, users’ ability to append their search queries with “Reddit” for specific topic resources was severely hampered. Consequently, search results became inaccessible or unhelpful due to moderators privatizing their pages as part of the protest against Reddit’s choice to charge developers for data access.

In response to user frustrations, Google has introduced the Perspectives tab, a new feature aimed at surfacing discussion forums and videos from various social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, and Quora. Available on both mobile web and the Google app in the U.S., Perspectives aims to provide users with valuable insights and perspectives from these platforms, eliminating the need to manually add “Reddit” to their searches.

At an full-staff meeting, Prabhakar Raghavan, Google’s senior vice president in charge of search, acknowledged the dissatisfaction expressed by users. He emphasized the need to prioritize user satisfaction and improve the search experience. This commitment to enhancing user experience aligns with Google’s ongoing efforts to revamp search and leverage generative artificial intelligence (AI) for more sophisticated and conversational answers to user queries.

Google recognizes the importance of staying at the forefront of AI advancements to remain competitive. During its annual developer conference, the company introduced the concept of Search Generative Experience, which presents in-depth results powered by generative AI. Although this feature is not yet widely available, it demonstrates Google’s commitment to leveraging AI to provide users with comprehensive and insightful search results.

Additionally, Google launched Bard, a ChatGPT competitor, earlier this year. While Bard remains separate from search and is still in experimental mode, it showcases Google’s dedication to exploring innovative solutions to enhance the user experience.

To address user concerns and provide valuable search results, Google recognizes the importance of deep research. By extracting relevant facts and ideas from various sources, Google aims to ensure the accuracy and comprehensiveness of its search results. Deep research enables Google to present users with information from a wide range of perspectives, fostering a more informed and well-rounded search experience.

One of the key challenges Google faces is striking a balance between generating revenue through ads and delivering relevant search results. Negative user feedback has highlighted frustrations with excessive ads and irrelevant search results. Google acknowledges the need to address these concerns and improve the core product that has made the company a household name.

Google’s commitment to improving the search experience is rooted in a user-centric approach. By prioritizing user satisfaction and addressing feedback, Google aims to create a search environment that is intuitive, informative, and tailored to individual needs. Through ongoing enhancements and the integration of AI technologies, Google seeks to empower users with the knowledge and resources they seek.

Google understands the importance of continuously evolving its search capabilities to meet user expectations. The introduction of the Perspectives feature and ongoing investments in generative AI demonstrate Google’s commitment to addressing user concerns and enhancing the search experience. By combining deep research, user feedback, and advanced technologies, Google strives to provide users with valuable and relevant search results. As Google continues to iterate and innovate, it remains dedicated to making users happy and fostering a search experience that is both informative and enjoyable.

With Apple’s recent announcement of their newest luxury processor — the M2 Ultra — people are already speculating on when we might see the next evolution in Apple’s silicon chips. Since the industry leader’s swap from Intel processors to their own proprietary Apple Silicon ones, customers have been anxiously waiting to see how the new chips might push the boundaries of power.

Hot off the heels of an announcement of the M2 Ultra, some rumors are saying that the M3 chip is already in early testing stages with the potential to see a release in 2024. What does that mean for Apple customers, and how is the new chip expected to stack up to previous iterations? Here’s all you need to know:

What is Apple Silicon?

Apple Silicon is the newest processing architecture to hit the computing world in recent memory. After the groundbreaking news from WWDC 2020, Apple announced its departure from Intel and all further use of Intel processors. In tandem with this, the tech giant also announced what it would replace the Intel chips with, Apple Silicon.

This was a pretty momentous move on Apple’s part, and while some met this news with apprehension, early adopters were quick to praise the switch. From a business perspective, it made sense for Apple to make the change to create its own processing infrastructure. It primarily gave Apple developers more control over the processing chips. Therefore this allowed them to make them more compatible with their products. Additionally, it was cheaper to build in-house than to purchase from an outside source. Along with the announcement of the new architecture came the announcement of the actual chips that would use that infrastructure: the M1.

The M1, Apple Silicon’s First Chip

The first to appear in Apple’s family of computer processors was the M1 chip. The announcement of Apple Silicon in June 2020. The first computers to come equipped with the new architecture came in November of the same year. Along came the 2020 Macbook Pro with the M1 launching with it.

The performance of the M1 chip in the Macbook Pro was impressive to many. It immediately seemed to outperform the previous Intel processors. While it did not come without its flaws, consumers were quick to accept the new chips as standard. The major shift in power came due in large part because of the new united memory architecture. Instead of having to expend energy swapping between pools of memory like on the Intel processors, Apple’s chips were now connected through one channel of data.

Apple would later go on to release the M1 Pro, the M1 Max, and the M1 Ultra. Each of these are larger, more powerful versions of the original M1 processor.

The M2, a Step Up

If the M1 was the first step into proprietary processors, then the M2 was where Apple began to hone its chips. First appearing in the 2022 Macbook Air and Pro, the M2 chip was a standard iterative upgrade to its predecessor. Boasting about a 20% increase in processing speed, the M2 was also more battery efficient than the previous M1.

Some months after the M2’s release was the introduction of the M2 Pro and the M2 Max. These followed the development line that the M1 began, each at a higher strength capability than the previous.
The most recent addition to the family of M2 chips was the announcement of the M2 Ultra. As of the June 5, 2023, Apple press release on the matter, the M2 Ultra is the highest power processor the company has released to date.

“M2 Ultra delivers astonishing performance and capabilities for our pro users’ most demanding workflows, while maintaining Apple silicon’s industry-leading power efficiency,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. “With huge performance gains in the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, combined with massive memory bandwidth in a single SoC, M2 Ultra is the world’s most powerful chip ever created for a personal computer.”

What to Expect for the Silicon M3

Most of the conversation about the M3 is speculative, but some have been granted exclusive access to information about the chip. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg’s Power On wrote about the data collected from an App Store developer

“The company has begun putting next-generation Macs with the M3 chips through their paces, testing them with third-party apps to ensure compatibility with its software ecosystem,” said Gurman.

Power On’s also included information about the anticipated specs we can expect from the M3 compared to the previous editions. After reports of a tested M3 Pro processor, it’s going to host 12 GPU cores, 18 graphics cores, and 36 GB of memory. As expected, this eclipses the previous 10 GPU cores, 16 graphics cores, and 32 GB of memory of the M2 Pro as well as the 8 GPU cores, 14 graphics cores, and 32 GB of memory of the M1 Pro.

While all three processors are impressive, it’s clear that Apple is implementing their iterative evolution in their chips as well. It’s through this iterative evolution that we see the next step in Apple Silicon’s processors.

So when can we expect the shiny new M3s? Gurman’s expectation places it near the end of 2023 or into 2024.

“My belief is the first Macs with M3 chips will begin arriving toward the end of the year or early next year,” said Gurman. “While the first 15-inch MacBook Air with an M2 chip is set to arrive this summer, the company is already working on M3-based iMacs, high-end and low-end MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs, I’m told.”

In hopes to consolidate its short-form content creation, YouTube has made plans to remove its stories feature. In tandem, the media company announced several new features that creators can look forward to. Stories will no longer be available to upload starting June, 26th, 2023, and any existing stories prior to this date will expire seven days after the original post date.

YouTube has been at the forefront of online video content creation since its inception back in 2005, but in recent years it’s been making changes to try and keep up with the burgeoning growth of bite-sized content like TikTok and Instagram. One of those changes was the 2018 implementation of ‘YouTube Stories’ reminiscent of the Snapchat feature with the same name. YouTube wasn’t the only adopter of stories, though. Both Instagram and Facebook added the disappearing posts back in 2016 and 2017 respectively, but what worked for those social media sites might not have for the video-housing giant.

Why Cut Stories?

It seems that stories simply didn’t live up to expectations, at least for YouTube. This short-form content existed too close to their other main source of quick consumables, YouTube Shorts. Similarly to how YouTube tried to emulate the success of Snapchat stories, the shorts are reminiscent of TikTok’s video length or Instagram’s Reels. The main differences between stories and shorts are the form of content and that content’s shelf life. Stories could host photos or videos that would disappear seven days after posting. Shorts, on the other hand, are exclusive to videos, up to 60 seconds in length, that exist on a dedicated scrollable tab, and they exist indefinitely.

For YouTube, stories existed to be an outlet for creators to create quick, easily digestible content for their viewers. However, on a platform based almost entirely on lasting video, they felt disjointed. Additionally, YouTube felt that stories were vastly underperforming compared to regular posts or even shorts, and thus the decision was made to get rid of them.

How Can Creators Interact with Viewers Now?

Creators shouldn’t worry too much about the removal of YouTube stories. There already exist a couple different tools they can use that work even better.

As mentioned, the main competitor to YouTube stories was YouTube’s own shorts page. This, of course, can fill in the potential hole of short-form videos. These videos help to garner more engagement in a channel’s main posts, as well as to be a forum for creators to cater their content to their viewers.

Another tool creators can use to get direct feedback from their audience is through the “Community” page. Anything from polls to announcements to Q&As gets posted there making it a great resource to get direct feedback. YouTube also plans to roll out more features for the community page in 2023.

What Features to Expect from YouTube in 2023

Out with the old and in with the new features. YouTube has dropped several new features already this year, and with more on the horizon, there’s a lot for both creators and viewers alike to be excited about.

What’s New?

Some of the most exciting new features that YouTube has already implemented in 2023 include changes to shorts, monetization, and how viewers can interact with creators.

Shorts received a makeover recently. Unlike before, creators can now create and choose custom thumbnails for their quick videos, allowing for more engagement and expression. Additionally, shorts will join the YouTube partner program later this year.

Monetization looks different, too. Now audiences have more outlets than ever to support their favorite creators. The most prominent of these outlets is merchandise. Now, instead of having to search for creator merch, YouTube now allows creators to tag products directly in their videos. In addition, YouTube expects to do a complete overhaul of its membership system and direct fan funding.

Fans of YouTube live streaming will also be excited to see live reactions coming to the site. A common feature of contemporary streaming sites, YouTube has caught up to the trend.

What’s Next?

In the latter half of the year waits some of the most anticipated additions to YouTube. The aforementioned changes to monetization through the membership program and additions to the community tab are just some of what we can expect in 2023.

One of the most welcome additions YouTube has announced is its changes to audio in their videos, and how they can use owned media without risking copyright infringement. This will come to us in the form of a vaster library of YouTube-owned music for creators to freely use, as well as an option to license popular music while maintaining revenue from videos the music is used in. This will offer creators more stability in monetization when utilizing songs from big-name artists.

More features for engagement are also expected in 2023. Multi-language videos are on the docket, allowing creators to add multiple audio tracks to a video depending on the region it’s shown. This feature was tested by popular creator Mr. Beast and has shown itself to be of great success.

Lastly, YouTube plans to add A/B testing for thumbnails this year, one of the most highly requested features from creators. This lets creators use two different thumbnails early in a video’s publishing to test for engagement.

What else YouTube plans to add to their site, we’ll just have to wait and see. So far the changes appear to be in favor of users on both sides of the content line.

Though a tight-knit team is something many aspire to have, it can be difficult to achieve. These types of teams support and motivate each other. They can also add to overall employee satisfaction and decrease turnover rates. But, growing closer as a team isn’t something that happens overnight.

This type of inclusive environment is built with deliberate strategy and attention. Like any relationship, it takes time to form bonds and build trust with one another. Creating this culture allows new members to join in as well. Keep reading for tips on creating a tight-knit team.

1. Collaborate with organized meetings.

Collaboration is one way to feel close as a team. Having set meetings for your team can also help with connection. It lets you come together to know what everyone is working on, who needs support, and when deadlines are set.

Schedule your larger department meetings as recurring. That way everyone knows that on the first Wednesday of the month, it’s team meeting day.

To that end, set up one-on-one meetings with each person you manage. Having this dedicated time for the employee to talk with their manager helps them feel seen and heard.

In both the larger group settings and individual check-ins, create an agenda and meeting minutes. Doing so keeps things on task and provides a record of action items as well. Try to keep both meeting types as a priority.

2. Realize language matters.

Do you want those employed by your organization to feel like part of a team and not a worker bee? Look at how you talk about them.

It might seem like a small factor, but the language you use matters. Some organizations call their workforce team members and not employees, for example. From the start, new employees being referred to as team members puts them on the team.

You could even go so far as to change up how you talk about departments. Call the Accounting Department the Accounting Team, for instance.

3. Foster connections.

Create an environment of connection. New team members can feel like a lonely outsider if folks ignore them or don’t include them.

Invite them into the group from the first day. If you’re a manager, encourage your direct reports to send a message welcoming new members. Have them introduce themselves and offer to help in whatever way they can.

It can be intimidating for new hires to reach out and ask questions, especially if they don’t know who to ask. Establishing a culture that welcomes others helps break down that barrier. It also can cause newer members to feel more engaged and connected to the organization faster.

If possible, take the new person out to lunch or cater breakfast as well. Make this a valuable part of the onboarding process.

4. Recognize your team.

Part of creating a great culture for your group is in recognizing their efforts. No one wants to only hear from their boss or colleagues when they’ve messed up.

Make sure to give positive feedback and kudos when workers do a great job as well. You could even set up a public system of recognizing those who go above and beyond, like a designated bulletin board.

You’ve heard the saying, “There’s no I in team.” Foster an environment of shout-outs and kudos as opposed to those selfishly wanting the spotlight.

Not only does this recognize those who are working hard, but it also naturally creates a collaborative versus individualistic, power-grab culture.

5. Encourage extracurricular activity.

Whether your team is remote or in person, encourage extracurricular activity. This could be something as simple as creating interest groups on your intranet to organizing a company kickball league.

On your intranet or internal social media channel, create employee-lead interest groups. Someone might start a hiking page, for example. Any member who enjoys hiking could join to chat about that hobby or even organize a meetup.

Some organizations sponsor book clubs to read impactful novels or books about professional development. This allows coworkers to come together and discuss the topics covered.

Whatever the activity might be, your team can bond over a shared experience. This commonality can help them feel closer to one another.

6. Create volunteer opportunities.

Much like extracurricular activities, volunteering can bring people together.

Setting up an organization-wide volunteer opportunity can be a way for you to give back to the local community. It shows the organization places value on helping others and lets your employees be a valuable part in that.

You could go so far as to offer paid time off for volunteering. Allowing team members to nominate the group to volunteer with can also create great buy-in. This helps in fostering a close culture in working together to provide good. It can also create loyalty to the company by showing the emphasis they place in serving their community.

In today’s labor market and with more and more jobs going remote or hybrid, connection is paramount. Employees want to feel like they’re part of something. Following the tips above can help you get on the path to having a tight-knit team.

It might take a little time and effort, but it will be worth it. Help create a team that comes together to support and motivate each other, and employee satisfaction and productivity will increase. You’ll enjoy being part of that team as well.

Technology has been very kind to the plagiarist.

Where once the plagiarist would have to re-type the paper or repaint the portrait, content theft now is just a mouse click or a keyboard shortcut away. Worse yet, whole technologies have been built around content theft. For example, RSS scraping applications can steal the content from thousands of feeds in a single hour, creating countless spam blogs.

However, technology is a double-edged sword. At the same time it has made content theft easier than ever, it has also empowered content producers with new, more powerful means of monitoring and enforcing their content rights.

No longer does a copyright holder have to wait to accidentally discover plagiarism or hope that a bystander will alert them, no longer is enforcement a long, arduous process. Every Webmaster, no matter how small, has the tools they need to track and stop theft of their content.

It is simply a matter of knowing where to look.

Prevention

Preventing content theft is something of a holy grail. It is the perfect solution, but also the least practical. The tools needed to prevent copying of work generally do more to annoy legitimate users than to stop plagiarists. That being said, there are a few prevention tools worth taking a look at.

Pictureshark – A hard to remove transluscent watermark is by far the most effective method of preventing image theft. Pictureshark is a fast, free and powerful batch image watermarking tool that can process hundreds of images with a variety of effects.

Devpapers .htaccess Hotlink Protection- For Webmasters that pay their bandwidth bills, image hotlinking is a double problem. Not only is it a form of content theft, but also of bandwidth theft as every load of the plagiarist’s page requires the image be pulled from the original server. Webmasters should test to see if their images can be hotlinkied and, if they can, consider editing the .htaccess file to prevent hotlinking or use a PHP script to achieve that end.

Bad Behavior – A PHP script available for most CMS platforms, Bad Behavior is an anti-spam tool that can also be used to stop some forms of automated content theft. Though not necessarily useful against RSS scraping, any “evil” bots that visit your sites, no matter for what reason, are likely to be caught in Bad Behavior’s net. This can stop malicious spidering and automated saving of content.

Watermark.Ws – Don’t have time to download software to watermark your images? Use Watermark.ws and add your overlays on the Web. Watermark.Ws lets you add text or an image over your copyrighted work and set the alpha level, enabling centrally-located and more powerful watermarks.

Detection

Detecting content theft, though not as desireable as prevention, is a much easier method. There are many tools that can easily detect content theft and, from there, one can easily follow up on it. Best of all, this has no impact on the legitimate readers of your site, just the those that abuse your content.

Google Alerts – Rather than searching for your own content by hand from time to time, let Google Alerts do it for you. Punch in a few unique phrases from your work, set Google Alerts to inform you when those phrases appear on the Web and relax. Best of all, it can be combined with other tools below for an even more powerful experience.

Copyscape – Based upon the Google API, Copyscape enables you to search for plagiarism of an entire page. It looks for content theft that traditional Google searches and Google Alerts may miss including sites that take only a part of your work. The free version is very limited and will only display the top ten results. Thus, it may not be practical for sites that allow some reuse of their content.

Digital Fingerprint Plugin – Maxpower’s Digital Finger Plugin for WordPress appends a unique phrase or key to the end of every post in your RSS feed. It then offers tools to help you search for that fingerprint on the Web. The plugin also works well with Google Alerts.

Technorati Watchlists – Much like Google Alerts, Techorati watchlists can be used to inform you instantly when unique keywords or a fingerprint appears on another blog. A very powerful tool for blogs.

Google Image Search – Detecting image plagiarism is very difficult, however, if you give your images unique file names you can search for that name in Google image search and locate duplicates of it that way. Most plagiarists do not bother to change image names when putting it up on their site, making it very easy to spot such infringements.

Cessation

Once plagiarism has been detected, it has to be stopped before the detection is of any use. Fortunately, there are several tools to help.

Copyfeed – A veritable swiss-army knife of content protection, Copyfeed not only adds a digital fingerprint to detect infringement, but also can be used to embed IP address of RSS scrapers in the posts andt hen, in turn, ban them from accessing the feed. For WordPress users, this plugin is practically a must-have.

Ebay VeRO Program – If your content regularly appears on Ebay, it might be worth your time to sign up for Ebay’s Verified Rights Owner Program to enable you to easily close auctions that infringe upon your rights. VeRO is easily the most powerful program of its kind on the Web and worthwhile for any Webmaster that finds a great deal of their work on Ebay.

Reporting

Sometimes, when stopping plagiarism or content theft, you can not take action yourself and, instead, have to report it to someone else. In those cases, there are many different tools and resources to help.

Domain Tools – Need to quickly find out who the host is of a dot com? Domain Tools can help. Just type in the domain and you’ll get all of the information you need about the site. Under “Server Data” you can easily locate all of the information about the server, including who operates it.

DMCA Templates – If you’re going to report a site to a U.S.-based host, you are going to need to file a DMCA notice. To do that, you’ll need a DMCA template. Fortunately, Ian McAnerin has posted templates of DMCA notices on his site, including one for each of the major search engines and a generic ISP one.

Plagiarism Today’s DMCA Contact Information – Once you know who the host is, the question becomes who to contact there. On my site, I’ve compiled a list of links to over 100 of the largest hosts, advertising networks and search engines. If you notice infringing content on a site hosted by one of these companies, just follow the link to report it. Odds are the company you need is somewhere on the list.

U.S. Copyright Office DMCA List – Similar to the list on my site, the United States Copyright Office maintains a list of DMCA contact information for various hosts. Though their list has many more companies, many major hosts have not registered and others have let their information fall out of date. However, it remains an excellent backup. This site requires Acrobat Reader or another PDF viewer to use.

Signature Extension – Instead of copying and pasting the template in every time it is needed, it is much easier to use the Signature Firefox extension and drop it in. Works great with shorter blocks of text and any template you might have use for. Functions well with Webmail systems as well as online reporting systems such as what is found at LiveJournal.

Non-Repudiation

Finally, in the event of a dispute regarding the ownership of the work, it may be important to have some evidence that the work is truly yours. With that in mind, there are some great services to help you verify the creation of your work.

Numly – Numly’s ESN system enables users to register their content, which is then fingerprinted and timestamped, and receive a special number that can be used to retrieve all of the pertinent information on it. Free accounts offer three ESNs per month. A WordPress plugin is available.

Registered Commons – From the Creative Commons team comes Registered Commons. Like Numly, RC lets you register your work, receive a certificate and an identification number and gives you a timestamp plus a fingerprint of the work. Both Numly and RC allow you to embed Creative Commons Licenses into your work. RC is completely free to use.

Archive.org – The Web Archive, which famously indexes and preserves old versions of Web pages, makes it possible to backtrack and see roughly how long a page was up. Though not as exact as an ESN or a Registered Commons registration, it can be useful in cases where the work was not registered and only a rough answer is needed.

Furl – Though not a non-repudiation service, Furl can be useful in preserving evidence against a plagiarist. A social bookmarking site, Furl also saves a cached copy of every page saved to it, this can be very useful if the plagiarist changes the page or removes the content. It is also valuable for your own records to have a file of what you did and why, just in case the issue comes up again later.

Conclusions

While technology has been kind to the plagiarist, it has been at least as kind to the author. For the first time in history and individual, without any great expense, can reach a worldwide audience and get his message out in numbers never before dreamed of.

Yes, with it comes a risk of plagiarism and content theft, but solutions are being created to mitigate that risk and streamline the process of protecting content and securing author’s rights.

It is and will continue to be a bumpy road, but if one knows how to navigate it, the ride can be more than tolerable.

Finding the top book blogs should not be difficult, so we have your back. Just as Yelp helps shoppers and diners choose where to spend cash, blogs help busy people decide the best ways to spend their free time. This is no insignificant contribution. In commercialized world, it can be hard to decipher the “good” from the “well-promoted” (two qualities that are ever more mutually exclusive), and time spent deciding between movies, books, or video games is time spent working, not playing.

Since you’ve spent the last four weeks in hot pursuit of the best holiday gifts for everyone on your list, give yourself a break and check out a list that’s just for you. These excellent top book blogs are guaranteed to save you time and get you geared up for the next big read.

1. Bookslut

Will appeal most to: Former and current English majors, book snobs, readers who would only see the movie first if it was based on a Stephen King novel, the manic and passionate daily reader.

Special because: This blog offers highly intelligent reviews that do more than praise or ridicule. They provide insight and context to enhance the reader’s experience. It’s almost like going to your own private literature seminar.

2. MobyLives!

Will appeal most to: Current or would-be booksellers, publishers, editors, and otherwise industry afflicted individuals (and their loved ones), librarians, writers, and Herman Melville fanatics.

Special because: Rarely can a publishing house (in this case Melville House, named for the author of the blog’s eponymous Moby-Dick) produce an industry blog that achieves independent success and avoids blatant self-promotion. MobyLives! is truly an exception, and anyone interested in the future of the book industry would do well to follow this daily blog with fervor.

3. In Which I Read Vintage Novels

Will appeal most to: The literary scholar, fans of the word “’twas,” individuals with a passion for yellow-stained pages containing that special “old book” musk, folks who want to read the classics but don’t know where to begin, the everyday reader.

Special because: It manages to gracefully toe the fine line between elitism and education. Surely, not an easy balance for a blog dedicated to the classics of literature to strike. The host and guest reviewers for this blog are both intelligent readers and everyday people. No one will feel condescended to or manipulated after reading these honest and forthright assessments, and don’t worry, they come with spoiler alerts.

4. The Deliberate Reader

Will appeal most to: Beach readers, airport impulse book-shoppers, mystery lovers, non-fiction fanatics, and folks who prefer a fast-paced thriller to a slow meditative monologue.

Special because: Let’s face it, it can be hard to get a recommendation for a book that isn’t necessary “literary,” especially in a bookstore (don’t get defensive, all you highfalutin bookslingers, you know it’s true). This blog fills that gap, reading all the those mystery series, self-help guides, and self-published novellas that you aren’t likely to find on the Staff Picks wall at your local seller, and reviewing them with candor and panache.

5. HTML Giant

Will appeal most to: Hipsters, fans of street art and formless poetry, would-be Beats, lovers of surrealist parlor games and all things Dada, those who’ve read everything and want a mainline into what’s hot on the literary scene today, experimental writers and artists of all walks.

Special because: Edited and maintained by indie author Blake Butler and friends, this blog features input, interviews, and rants from some seriously up-and-coming literary darlings. We’re not talking yawn-inducing, formulaic novel producing graduates of the Iowa Writers workshop. These fools write from their guts, and sometimes the result is bloody. For anyone wondering where the lifeblood of literature is pumping, HTML Giant will be a tremendous relief.

The accessibility of Pharmacy has been made possible through its widespread online availability. Having an online platform where you can let your potential customers purchase from your pharmacy will provide comfort and convenience for them. Consumers now don’t need to go through the difficulty of finding the nearest pharmacy as they can access it through their phones or computer. Despite the easy access, it is still important that the pharmacy provides a level of trust and also easy accessibility of the platform. Online sources are incredibly useful for first-time moms, especially in this time of the pandemic. If you’re looking into creating a blog in this niche, there are actually several areas that you can cover on your website. Remember that blogs like this usually offer not just information and tips but also support to new moms who are taking on this path of motherhood. It’s a surreal feeling and can be overwhelming, so making sure that your blog can be their safe, supportive space is important. Here are some postpartum blogs for new moms that you can check out for inspiration.

Swaddles n’ Bottles

Swaddles n’ Bottles is kind of a one-stop blog for all things related to new motherhood. Readers can find practical pieces of advice not just on pregnancy but also on postpartum body and breastfeeding. The posts include pumping tips as well as baby tips. Articles are organized by stages of pregnancy and postpartum. So if you have a general overview of all things postpartum, this website is a great example of how your blog can look like.

Fit Bottomed Girls

Postpartum is so much more than just giving birth. Knowing how to take care of a newborn as well as yourself postpartum is essential to both parties’ well-being. If you have knowledge of how new moms can take care of themselves and their bodies postpartum, you might be able to find inspiration in Fit Bottomed Girls when creating your page. It’s an inclusive blog that supports new moms and coaches them not just in terms of motherhood but also in terms of fitness and nutrition.

Baby Chick

From pregnancy to birth and after, Baby Chick offers advice on what it’s like to be a parent. It features tips on how to take care of a baby and to create a lifestyle that would best suit a mom and a baby’s needs. There’s no solid handbook that teaches anyone how to be a good parent, but this blog aims to empower mothers to be the best that they can be, which is incredibly important in this niche.

Pregnant Chicken

Pregnant Chicken enables readers to have an idea of what to expect when you have a newborn baby. It’s not all serious and there are light anecdotes that make learning about being a new mom fun as well. It has sections specifically for postpartum, new baby, parenthood, and even helping out. This blog even features a category called “Scary Shit.” Going for a lighthearted kind of blog can also help ease the pressure that some mothers may feel postpartum so it’s something you can keep in mind with your blog.

The Fussy Baby Site

Motherhood is extra harder to navigate for new moms when they have a fussy baby. Blog guides like The Fussy Baby Site come in handy during times like this. It offers techniques on how to deal with a colicky baby or one who has high needs. As a blogger, you can provide tips on how to better help their babies fall asleep or keep them entertained.

The Leaky Boob

Breastfeeding is a full-time job and a lot can go wrong if not done properly. This is why new moms usually try to prepare themselves even before giving birth to make breastfeeding as seamless as possible (if even possible). Blogs like The Leaky Boob offer pieces of advice to make breastfeeding easier for both the mother and the baby. It’s a community where mothers from all over the world support each other with real stories and experiences.

Coffee and Coos

Along with breastfeeding and motherhood, postpartum also comes with the issue of money. For moms who have to work from home or spend money on baby items on a budget, Coffee and Coos is one of the blogs that can help these readers. If you want to be part of this niche, you can write about tips on how to save money on typically expensive baby items and where to buy affordable ones. You can also provide helpful resources on other postpartum topics like breastfeeding, helping babies to sleep, and even CPR for babies.

Mindful Mamas Club

After a child has been born, everyone talks about this new journey of motherhood. However, the topic of postpartum issues that affect mothers such as postpartum depression doesn’t always come up. There are different types of therapy that mothers can take and a lot of them also look for support through postpartum blogs like the Mindful Mamas Club. Mothers who go through this can relate to others’ real-life stories. As a blogger in this niche, you can help moms overcome this issue by providing insights and support.

One of the most popular web search topics in the past year has been home improvement. With people forced to stay at home for a longer period of time, home improvement has been among the only options they have to stay productive. If you have some great ideas about home improvement and wish to create a blog to join this niche, here are some home improvement blogs you can draw inspiration from.

Centsational Style

Most people look for design ideas that can help them make their home look better without breaking the bank. Centsational Style thinks outside the box and even offers ways on how their audience can better shop for the items they’ll need for their home projects. Everything is DIY, which is what most people are into these days. This website provides ideas and concepts on how readers can redesign their homes on a budget.

Kaleidoscope Living

Formerly known as Designer Trapped, Kaleidoscope Living shares ideas regarding interior design and home renovation. Everything is also DIY so readers can simply just follow through the guidelines. Even better, the options given in this blog are usually affordable so it won’t hurt the wallet. From the top menu, readers can easily access DIY projects and guides for shopping and gifts, which you can also apply to your blog.

DIY Show Off

DIY projects are immensely popular these days so creating a blog that is centered around this concept would certainly be a good idea. Aside from guides, you can also put tutorials as part of your website, similar to DIY Show Off. With tutorials, it’ll be easier for your audience to follow instructions on how to accomplish certain projects. Showing your actual home projects could also draw in more audiences interested in your craft.

One Project Closer

Part of home improvement and renovation projects is the proper handling of tools, especially when handling electrical wires. No, you don’t exactly need an electrical engineering degree to get things done. If you have the appropriate knowledge on how to help people with handling tools and devices, this can be your niche, similar to One Project Closer. You can post project guides as well as specific tool posts on how to properly use each one of them.

Old Town Home

If you have any experience in flipping houses, you can share your experiences and different projects in a blog, just like Old Town Home. It’s not easy nor is it cheap, so people usually look for guides on how to do it the best way possible without spending too much. You can showcase your past projects and also offers tutorials on how to accomplish certain tasks related to flipping old homes.

Remodelaholic

People often search for ideas when it comes to remodeling a house. There are so many different styles that you can incorporate into each room and this is where Remodelaholic comes into play. Each room can have its own personality and that is where you can base its style. Project ideas and how you can craft your own DIYs can be pretty useful when remodeling each room, and users can find all of that in this blog. If you have your own concepts of these, it can be the major theme of your home improvement blog as well.

Remodelista

Instead of covering all areas of home improvement, your niche can also focus on lifestyle pieces that can accentuate each room of the house. Remodelista is a great blog where readers can find tips on home décor and even shop for these items on the website. In addition, users can also find remodeling guides and before and after shots of remodeled houses.

Home Tips

Home improvement doesn’t only mean upscaling someone’s house. It can also include repairing broken fixtures or building sheds in a backyard. These are common projects that people typically search for and try to do themselves. Home Tips is a blog that offers all these guides and techniques to help its audience improve their living conditions. The blog’s main menu even includes specific areas like plumbing, electricity, and appliances. If you have extensive knowledge in these areas, your niche could be like being the jack-of-all-trades in home improvement.

EV Blogs, or electric vehicle blogs, are starting to gain popularity as the fame of EVs rise all around the world. Electric vehicles are environmentally friendly and have very low running costs as they use almost zero fuel. More and more people are using electric vehicles every day as countries gear towards “zero emissions”. This is the most crucial time for information about EVs, which is why creating an EV blog may be a top choice for a blog niche.

If you are planning to write a blog about electric vehicles or EVs, these are among the best EV blogs to be inspired by:

Autoblog – Green

Autoblog – green will tell you all about the things you need to learn about electric vehicles in general. What makes this blog great is its car catalogue which could be searched by make and model. The blog also has links to great places to buy EVs making Autoblog – green such a good resource for enthusiasts.

Charged

The blog has an e-magazine layout, which is something you might want to consider when creating a car-related blog. Since enthusiasts not only want to research about the look but also want to research about anything EV-related, presenting it in a car magazine layout is the most effective. For instance, this EV not only talks about the cars but also about charging (and all information it entails). This is where you would probably learn about the best electric vehicle charging station.

Inside EVs

The ‘Compare EVs’ category is a unique feature for this blog. If you are planning to write something about electric vehicles, this kind of presentation is a good idea. Enthusiasts and readers would want to read and compare two different brands, vehicles, charging stations, and the like. It is more informative for them.

EV Obsession

Review blogs are also very popular, especially when entering the car enthusiast niche. So, just like in this blog, you may choose to review different brands, makes, and models of electric vehicles. You may decide to review on performance, charging, charging locations, consumption, and more.

EV Life

EV Life is not exactly a blog. Instead, it is a resource that provides people with opportunities to gain incentives in buying an electric vehicle. Simply, the website is giving people opportunities to purchase an electric vehicle and push for the widening of electric car adoption all over the world. The website included a “blog” to teach more people about what electric cars could give. This is a good hook for readers. Most people visiting EV life are probably those that are already interested in buying an electric car. However, the blog part of the website drives traffic into the website, even those that are not yet in the “buying mode”.

Place To Plug

This is also a good way to learn about the EV community, different EV charging solutions, and other advancements in EV. If you are planning to join the EV blog community, you may choose a specific area of “expertise” since these are still quite rare. Just like in this blog that focuses mostly on EV charging solutions and other essentials.

Current EV

Current EV is a blog that publishes more news-like content. These could be announcements of new models, technologies, and the like. This is also a good approach to creating an EV blog if you want to be on top of the latest trends and news in the industry. This way, readers would want to go back and read new content on your page every time.

There are a lot more EV blogs on the internet to be inspired by. And, there is always something new to learn about electric vehicles, their charging solutions, new charging locations, and the like. There is always new content to write about this cool, sustainable niche.

Whether you’re interested in investing in real estate or just doing some research for a real estate-related client, it’s important to be familiar with the world of real estate blogging. Reviewing the top real estate blogs can introduce you to new topics, keep you up-to-date with the latest trends, and help you become an authority when writing about real estate.

The Best Real Estate Blogs

These are some of the best real estate blogs to follow as of 2021:

1. The Close. The Close was designed as a real estate blog meant to help real estate agents get more business (and close more deals – hence the name). If you love the content here, you can also upgrade to a “The Close Pro” account and get access to a more robust library of information.

2. Realtor. As a respected authority in the real estate industry, it’s no surprise that Realtor.com has an impressive blog. There, you’ll find articles covering a range of topics, including how to become a better real estate agent – and how to approach buying or selling a home as a consumer.

3. Keeping Current Matters. Keeping Current Matters targets real estate agents directly, but it has articles covering a host of different subjects since one of its primary goals is helping real estate agents better educate their clients.

4. Jason Fox. Jason Fox’s blog is especially valuable for real estate freelance bloggers because it focuses on content marketing, social media, SEO, and other digital marketing strategies for real estate agents. It can help you serve your real estate clients better – and garner more influence in the real estate community.

5. Zillow Porchlight. One of the most popular real estate blogs in the world from one of the biggest real estate platforms in the world, Zillow Porchlight offers tons of articles from different niches related to real estate. It’s a great source of both knowledge and inspiration so you can serve your real estate clients better.

The Benefits of Blogging About Real Estate

If you’re interested in writing about real estate, you should know there are some impressive benefits you could enjoy in the process:

· Opportunities for ongoing learning. First, writing a blog is the perfect opportunity to do more research, discover new topics, and learn more about the industry. You can write about general topics, like current real estate pricing trends in your area, or about niche topics – like how to list and market a specific type of house. Either way, you can dive into a rabbit hole of information online in your research, then process and present that information to other people. If you do this consistently, you’ll end up becoming much more knowledgeable and experienced in this field – possibly opening the door to investing and further opportunities for revenue generation.

· Content marketing and search engine optimization (SEO). Writing a blog is one of the most important elements of any content marketing or search engine optimization (SEO) strategy. If you’re blogging on a client’s real estate agency website, you’ll end up generating more traffic – and hopefully, more business from that client in the future. Plus, spending time in the blogging game can help you better understand new marketing perspectives.

· Networking and community. Blogging is also a great way to meet new people and flesh out your professional network – especially if you’re interested in meeting more people who also blog regularly. As you gain authority and notoriety in the real estate blogging space, you’ll have the chance to meet and talk to other real estate agents and bloggers – as well as investors and other real estate professionals. Whether you’re interested in perfecting your own craft, collaborating with others, landing new clients, or just learning more, this can be valuable.

Landing Your First Real Estate Clients

As you gain more of a reputation in the real estate space (and get more referrals), it will be easy to land more real estate clients – but getting your first real estate clients can be tricky.

Here are some fast tips to help you do it:

· Find a niche for yourself. There are thousands of real estate bloggers out there, all competing for reader attention. If you want a chance of standing out and capturing a segment of real estate clients, you’ll need to find some way to distinguish yourself. Why should someone read your blog and not someone else’s? Consider appealing to a specific demographic or covering a topic that’s rarely covered elsewhere.

· Write a business plan (or something similar). You may also want to write a business plan for your real estate blogging services. If you don’t like the idea of doing something so formal, you should at least put together an action plan for how you’re going to appeal to (and build) your audience.

· Be prepared to market yourself. Even if your real estate blog work is amazing, it’s not going to generate attention by itself. You’ll need to support your own blog with ongoing marketing, advertising, and promotional efforts. Consider these as part of your strategy and be prepared to make an investment if you want to make a splash.

Direct mail campaigns using tools like Wise Pelican to generate real estate postcards can be a great way to generate listings.

With all real estate marketing campaigns, it’s important that you are incredibly consistent when using direct mail to market yourself as a real estate agent.

· Talk the talk. Real estate agents won’t hire you unless they believe you’re truly an authority in this space. Get familiar with the vocabulary and the latest trends so you can hold an engaging conversation.

Following real estate blogs is one of the best ways to sharpen your skills as a freelance blogger in the real estate space. And fortunately, there are many to choose from. Follow some of your favorites and stay tuned as the markets continue to develop.

The social media giant, Facebook, has just recently launched a new platform for creatives – Facebook Bulletin. Aspiring, independent writers in the world are excited that finally, they have a platform to publish their works that could reach billions of people all around the world.

Bloggers for websites are the OGs in content creation. It all started with that – written work. Before all the social media platforms, micro-blogging sites, TikTok, or YouTube, written blogs connect creatives to readers. But through the years, with the advent of advancing technology, we start to forget about personal blogs and exchanged reading prose with watching makeup tutorials and dance challenges.

The idea of Facebook’s bulletin is ambitious, but could it really boost all independent creatives out there?

What is Facebook Bulletin?

This new platform is a service for writers. The goal is to help aspiring, independent writers grow their following. Bulletin also provides a platform for aspiring writers to create their own brands and monetize their content without having to use third-party websites for presence.

Facebook Bulletin has a set of tools for writers. This includes publishing tools and a CMS. This means that creatives can create their own standalone websites with the help of Bulletin and take their subscribers there. Now, Facebook’s Bulletin does not just cover articles and posts. The platform also has a diverse range of content like podcasts, art, and more.

Facebook Bulletin Screenshot

How does it work?

Let’s go through the experience of getting into the page first, as a reader. That way we will know how to strategize our work to gain the attention of users. The platform is standalone; the app does not feature the new website and we only got there because we read it outside of Facebook. Going in, we were expecting the page to ask us our interests typical to platforms like this but it didn’t. The main page describes what Bulletin is and how it works for readers. There are featured articles, featured publications, and featured writers. But one thing really bugged us throughout that experience, there is no search button anywhere!

Featured Publications Screenshot

Visiting the website, with the eyes of a reader, gave us more questions than answers. What Bulletin promises its creatives is impressive, but how does it work? The goal of Bulletin may actually answer this, as well as the search button issue. Facebook promises to use users’ newsfeeds to feature publications and posts from Bulletin. This means that content on Bulletin will be integrated within Facebook pages. Instead of taking in content from third-party websites, the goal of Bulletin is to create a content bank just within Facebook. So this means that the usual articles you see on your feed may be replaced by content from Bulletin.

How can writers start earning from it?

The easiest way to explain payments would be – it is going to be made via Facebook pay. Facebook users may find articles to read and if they like the topics they may follow featured writers. Now, for users to get access to all the good stuff, they must pay a premium through Facebook Pay. Bulletin promises its writers that they will receive 100% of the subscription fees. Creatives also have the ability to control certain features to encourage readers to subscribe. This may include commenting, being on the email list, or getting notifications for new content.

How exactly writers can monetize their work (other than through exclusive subscription) on the platform still remains unclear. Clicks, views, visits, or user interactions – these have not been discussed yet. One thing is clear though – monetization may not work like your typical SEO.

FAQs Screenshot

The good and the bad

The main question, of course, is how do writers get subscriptions? Bulletin is launched not as a tab on the Facebook app. Instead, it is launched as a standalone website (Bulletin.com). How can writers take leverage of the Facebook community? Unlike other websites that do not necessarily require log-ins for readers to gain access to content, Bulletin gives readers an option to log in with their Facebook accounts. Maybe the goal here is to have a “newsfeed” based on the browsing behavior of the Facebook user? Right now, it is not evident on the website.

Why did they create Bulletin separately from Facebook? There are a lot of good answers for this and the most important is that Facebook wants creatives to create their own brands. The Facebook community is only a jumping point to gaining subscriptions. But the reality is, there are a lot of people who are not on Facebook. The goal is to help creatives gain exposure and confidence through Facebook, and limiting exposure within the social media platform may be a hindrance for the creative.

For Facebook Bulletin’s Future

At the moment, since it is in its beta phase, the service is only available in the US. The features (both for the readers and the creatives) are still very limited. In fact, they only have a selection of featured writers and publications.

The good thing is that more features and tools will be made available in the months to come. This means that if you think that the platform is still glitchy, or the tools are not enough, there is space for Facebook to still develop what you need. Little by little, as the platform gains widespread success in the US, the feature will also be launched in other places in the world.

There are many old blogging sites we all have forgotten now that social media is such a big part of our lives. Little do teenagers now know, blogging was the viral craze for teenage millenials back in the late 1990s and early 2000s. At the time, there were so many websites where anyone could post their journals for free.

Originally known as “web logging”, it was the first instance of personalized “presence” on the internet. These are brief posts of their thoughts and idea – basically an online diary or journal. It became quite popular and trendy. Everyone just had to have an internet presence, whether it is “airing out” your personal diary online. If anything, these old blogging sites GAVE BIRTH to social media.

What many people are unaware of, whether they rejoice or cringe about it, is that some of these old blogging sites STILL EXISTS ON THE INTERNET. Here are some of them:

Livejournal

As the name suggests, the website is a platform that offers FREE services. It was created and launched in 1999, which is more than two decades ago! Users could not only create but also customize their personal diaries. Everyone could write about anything – what they are doing, their goals, what when about during their day, and more. It was so popular that many famous writers used it as a platform. One of these would be George R. R. Martin, the writer of the famous series ‘The Game of Thrones’.

People used it a lot to publish content. Beyond the “journaling”, there are fan-fiction works, comics, and art. It was also one of the first websites that allow its users to have a “friends list”. These ‘friends’ could interact with your content through commenting. Pro users even have a “voice post” option. Remember, this was PRE-YouTube so video blogs were not a thing yet.

The official downfall of Livejournal started when its owners placed a ban on taboo topics like politics and LGBTQ in 2017 – YIKES! Millions immediately closed their accounts.

Blogger

Officially launched in 1999, Blogger is the first blog site hosted by Google after the company acquired it back in 2003. Many people would know the website by its famous subdomain, blogspot.com. Blogger was one of the foundations of blogging and may be considered as the reason why blogging became so popular back then.

Believe it or not, it was only in 2015 that the company announced a ban on sexually explicit content. However, they did not have any restriction on sexual content as long as it is “artistic, scientific, or educational”. Soon, the company reversed its decision which is why Blogger is considered as an “adult content website”.

Open Diary

It was one of the first blogging websites on the internet, being launched in 1998. It was shut down in 2014 but was reinvented and relaunched in 2018. Literally, the website is an “open diary” where people could put their journals online. The website was also one of the firsts to allow users to comment on another user’s blog entry.

Tumblr

While it was developed at a much later time, in 2007, Tumblr was the first of its kind. This is the first time that anyone ever heard the term “microblogging”. Users could post in short form, or in just a few words. Tumblr happened before Twitter, so it might be one of the reasons why many users are still online on it today.

Archive of Our Own

Blogging may have started as journaling or writing a diary. However, it soon took a totally different direction. These blog sites became the center of artistry and exploration. There are artworks, stories, documentaries, and more. Archive of Our Own is a blog intended exactly for these artists where they could create and post nonprofit and noncommercial works.

Blogsome

If you want to know what old-school blogging looks like, going to the Blogsome website will surely take you back in time. It may look like it was left behind in 2009, a time capsule of some sort, but it still very much serves its purpose – providing an online platform for your diary entries.

Xanga

Xanga was launched in 1999 as well, the Golden Year of blogging. It had initially been dissolved back in 2013, but a new Xanga has been reportedly created for its millions of users. It was one of the first times that users could create more than a written blog. Xanga allowed photoblogs, audioblogs, and videoblogs. There are also blogrings (or blogging groups) complete with forums and chatrooms where users could join together.

Back when it was so popular, Xanga had more than 30 million users! This was the time when people had dial-up internet and nothing but an online encyclopedia.

Typepad

This website was launched in 2003. The content people create for this was similar to those on Etsy and Pinterest. There are a lot of DIY projects, guides, and how-tos. Just imagine creating content via a step-by-step photo journal of your favorite hobby, those were the days. Literally sharing your passions with the rest of the world!

2020 has turned out to be quite an unpredictable year. The global economy is experiencing a slowdown due to the pandemic. Several industries, including digital advertising, are going through a difficult period. Ad budgets shrank, which means revenue for publishers has taken a hit. With the year having entered the last quarter, it is important to draw lessons from what has gone by and develop strategies for the future.

Here we present some valuable lessons for publishers from 2020:

Leveraging programmatic can help publishers mitigate challenges.

While the entire advertising industry was reeling under losses, publishers found a savior in the form of programmatic advertising. Throughout the first half of 2020, a significant part of the global population stayed at home and as a result, the consumption of digital content went up. Social media browsing saw an increase of 21 percent while consumption of news saw a 36 percent raise. Programmatic advertising enabled publishers to make the most of these shifts in audience behavior by delivering according to the scale of demand. Even though there were some budget cuts, audience numbers for quality content went up, and programmatic delivered on its USP by efficiently monetizing at scale. Programmatic helped publishers cut back on potential losses by keeping bidding efficiency high, so that publishers can squeeze out every bit of value from their content. Those publishers who are not on the programmatic bandwagon yet, are now making plans to get on board.

Search advertising is much more resilient than display advertising.

While the spending on traditional advertising saw a sharp fall of 51 percent, the ad spend for paid search advertising saw a smaller decline of 30 percent. Across the board, search advertising proved to be highly resilient even in the face of the crises. Ad networks with access to search budgets delivered to traditional display inventory have been a secret revenue hack that helped publishers weather the storm better than expected.

This squeeze on budgets has also come around the same time as a global squeeze on free-flowing user data that ad networks can use for targeting. Search ads use intent funneling based on keywords and are highly effective for delivering relevant ads without cookies. With the performance shown by search and context-driven ads at an all-time high, advertisers maintained their outlays for these parts of the digital pie.

Contextual is a must-have in every ad-stack.

In an unpredictable online ecosystem, brand safety is key to maintaining company reputation. With disinformation and fake news around political commentary as well as health and fitness at an all-time, brand safety has become even more important for advertisers who are growing increasingly nervous about the right way to deploy their digital budgets.

To deliver on brand safety, ad publishers and advertisers have always relied on contextual advertising. With the content-based targeting opportunities that contextual provides, publishers have been able to offer brand-safe spaces where premium advertising dollars can find reach through relevant ads. In short, 2020 has brought contextual back into focus. As we go into the end of the year, brands are expected to spend more on contextual ads, and publishers should look to leverage contextual ads alongside their content to diversify their sources of ad revenue and safeguard future growth.

Conclusion

The crisis-prone first half of 2020 has led to quite a few revelations in the advertising industry. Connecting the dots has helped us understand that publishers need to hit the sweet spot in their revenue mix, by making the most of programmatic, contextual tech, and search demand. In doing so, ad publishers will be able to make the best out of available opportunities as we head into 2021, which publishers and advertisers are hoping will be a year of recovery.

Blogging, vlogging, and influencing are among the highest-paying employment in this digital age. It may be true that a good percentage of accounts on social media platforms are either bloggers or influencers. This makes the development of computer-generated influencers inevitable in the future. And that future is now.

What are Virtual or CGI Influencers?

Also known as a CGI (computer-generated imagery), these types of virtual graphics have been used to aid different forms of media through the years. CGI could be used in commercials, simulators, video games, art, and films. It is no question that CGI is important to the digital entertainment industry. This is why it comes to no surprise one brand develop a CGI influencer at one point.

Virtual influencers of CGI influencers are basically internet celebrities that are developed by a brand or company. These digital avatars are developed to act like human bloggers with their own style, voice, and image. These digital avatars are programmed to interact with the audiences as authentically as possible. Unlike human influencers, never get tired, emotional, or hurt by all the drama on the internet. Basically, they were created specifically to represent brands – to be controlled completely behind-the-scenes.

Should human influencers and bloggers be threatened by their existence? It is inevitable that some brands will prefer CGI influencers because it is completely under their control, for brand safety. There will be no contract and no controversies. They are programmed to be easily adaptable. However, there are still brands that will prefer the authenticity of human emotions to create a more relatable image.

Popular CGI Influencers

Through the past five years, there had been a multitude of CGI or virtual influencers that gained popularity. Here are a few of the most prominent and popular:

Seraphine for League of Legends

One of the latest developed CGI influencers, Seraphine is a player-controlled champion on the famous game League of Legends. Obviously developed to create hype on the game’s 2020 release, Seraphine’s character is developed first as an influencer on various social media like Twitter.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Seraphine has multiple talents. She has her own Twitter account, designed and managed just like a real teenage girl’s Twitter page. She, a singer, has released a single with k-pop girl group K/DA. This group is themed to be League of Legends characters, so Seraphine just fits the part beautifully. Lastly, she has multiple abilities that will help players win on the games.

The release of Seraphine got the League of Legends game the hype that it needed in its 2020 return. Players and fans started snooping around for clues on who and what the mysterious Seraphine is. This made the game trending for a while. The point of creating Seraphine to be a virtual or CGI influencer for League of Legends is deemed to be a success.

On Social Media: Lil Miquela

She may be considered as the first of all firsts. Lil Miquela is the most prominent and popular CGI influencer with more than a million followers on social media. She was originally developed and released in 2016 and has consistently gained more followers over the years. Developed to interact with audiences like a human, she posts regularly on her Instagram about her life. She even has a backstory, political opinions, work, relationships, and social life.

Because of the way she was designed and marketed, a lot of people on the internet originally debated if she was a real person or a CGI. She is only an artificial influencer but her net worth is around 6 Million US dollars.

Bermuda and Shudu

These two influencers are made similarly to Lil Miquela. Originally, Bermuda was developed to become a rival to the former. Bermuda also has a CGI influencer boyfriend known as Blawko. These three, including Lil Miquela, have YouTube channels with consistent movement and following. Unlike Bermuda, Blawko, and Lil Miquela, Shudu was created by a photographer to become the “World’s First Digital Supermodel”. She is so popular that she has gained partnerships with popular luxury brands like Fenty Beauty and Balmain.

How will this affect you as a blogger?

The main role of a blogger or an influencer is to represent brands. They work similarly to models. One of the reasons why influencing and vlogging has become a popular means to represent brands is the fact that they are relatable. The more relatable an influencer or blogger is, the more popular they are.

The internet audience would prefer to see brands on people they think are “like them”. The same skin tone, body type, hair type, and more. Audiences prefer seeing products tested by so-called ordinary people. People who watch influencers like to hear their opinions on the products (aka reviews), and see for themselves the results it brought about (before and after).

This is maybe where virtual influencers will fail. They may be programmed to show emotions similar to humans and authentically interact with conversations. However, they will fail at showing the biology of things. For instance, how skincare products affect human skin. Or, show results of exercise routines. This willingness to try and test products for the good of the people of the internet makes the role of an influencer essential for brands. They are not hyper-realistic models with unideal beauty standards. Human influencers are not CGI with digitally produced skin. They are ordinary people just like the audiences watching them on screens.

Keeping a niche in mind will help reduce the overwhelming pressure of choosing topics to write about. The theme of the blog takes charge of the direction of the content. It also narrows down the focus of the content and tells the owner what to blog about. However, the current pandemic has changed blogging forever.

Here are a few good niches that can help you choose what to blog about during this pandemic.

Food, Recipes and Cooking ideas

Even without a pandemic, blogs about food, recipes, and cooking are pretty popular. With takeaways and drive-thrus unavailable during the start of the mandated community quarantines, there simply is no other option than to cook.

Many Millenials prefer takeaways and fast food than cooking at home. This is because they usually live away from their family because of their careers. Typically living alone, cooking for one is not exciting enough and takes up too much time and effort.

However, things started to change because of the pandemic. There are real risks of unprecedented exposure when eating out or ordering food. This is why many people started to consider cooking at home for health reasons. Not only that, but many people also decided to eat healthier meals.

One specific niche that is getting quite the hype nowadays is sustainable eating and cooking. People are now moving towards getting better nutrition and at the same time being a responsible consumer. This includes zero-waste cooking options, plant-based diets, and more.

DIY and Home Improvement Niche

With the lockdown and mandated quarantine, many people now have the time to finally do that home project they have been putting off. This may be repainting an area in the house, changing the flooring of a room, constructing a separate room, and more. Even after the pandemic, home improvement niches generate a lot of traffic. There is a wide range of audiences.

Some people simply want to look for a new hobby and weeks inside the house with nothing to do is the perfect time to learn something new. Maybe a hobby blog or a tutorial blog is better?

What to blog about Finance and Investments

With a lot of people losing businesses and jobs because of the economic effects of the pandemic, people are starting to get wiser about their finances. This is why ‘money-making’ websites, finance handling tutorials, and investments are quite popular topics nowadays.

For instance, choose to blog to inform about available small-time investments which are applicable for individuals. It is good to help others learn where to put their money, and how to get about it. Sometimes that little nudge of knowledge gives enough confidence for a wise investment. Another is to develop a blog that gives ‘money-generating’ tips and activities.

Or better yet, create a website that teaches individuals how to develop their own independent blogs. Teach tips on how to generate income from creating content. This is an interesting niche to blog about.

Health and Fitness

Gyms, parks, and other public areas are currently closed during the pandemic. Staying outside for long periods of time is actually discouraged. However, in this pandemic, it is important to keep the body strong and healthy. This is why home workouts became quite popular this year. It is possible to get the body you want just by working out at home, even without any gym equipment. This is what health and fitness blogs always teach their audiences.

It is helpful to focus first on home exercises and tips for beginners or people who have not been into fitness for a long time. Give your readers the confidence to start a new exercise routine. Then, it is also a good idea to look at different fitness trends like HIIT or yoga.

What to blog about Parenting

Especially now that schools are closed due to the pandemic, parents have to handle work, kids, and house management all at once. Why not give a little help by developing a parenting website. In this niche, there are a variety of topics to blog about. An example would be healthy food alternatives, smart activities for children, and more. Homeschooling tutorials or tips is also a popular search topic nowadays.

Pro-Tips to determine what to blog about:

  • Do not choose a blog you know nothing about, even if it is very profitable. This reduces the credibility and authenticity of a blog. Eventually, without quality work, a blog will not be able to generate traffic.
  • It is important to select a niche that is not overly specific. For instance, creating a recipe blog is great but developing a chicken recipe website does not necessarily make sense. Although it is possible to create a blog focused entirely on chicken recipes, the target audience is significantly reduced and lower organic internet traffic will be produced.
  • Always evolve content. Research about what content is popular with your target audience. Improve your content to fit their requests.

Have you ever seen memes that say “13 years old now vs me when I was 13”? There are other similar memes, but basically what they depict is that today’s youngsters are very different from the youngsters of past generations.

How young is young? Or how old does one have to be in order to make a difference?

Thanks to technology and social media, the work of young people has not gone unnoticed. Gone are the days when people would say, “You’re still a kid“. Ageism may be hitting the older generations, but is showing favor to the young ones.

In 2019, 17-year-old Greta Thunberg became a household name because of how she bravely stepped up to call attention to the climate crisis. She was TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year.

Malala Yousafzai, an education activist, received the Nobel Peace Prize when she was also 17 years old (Malala is now 22), the youngest ever to receive that recognition.

Here are some other stories of youth who deserve to be recognized and applauded. They may be older or younger than Greta or Malala, but they are no longer waiting for the older ones to do the work. They have taken it upon themselves to act now.

Louise Mabulo, 21 years old

Louise is a chef, farmer, and entrepreneur. She is the founder of The Cacao Project. This project not only gives cacao farmers seedlings but also trains them in the best practices of sustainable cacao farming. According to Forbes, The Cacao Project has helped more than 200 farmers plant 80,000 trees — this also helps address the Philippines’ reforestation concerns.

Melati and Isabel Wijsen, 19 and 17 years old

Sisters Melati and Isabel are the founders of Bye Bye Plastic Bags, which their website describes as “an NGO driven by youth to say NO to plastic bags.” For 6 years, they advocated and petitioned for the ban of single-use plastics, which the Bali, Indonesia government finally decided to implement. This then gave birth to Mountain Mamas, a project where local women of Bali are trained to make reusable bags.

Kisum Chan and Lincoln Lee, 21 and 22 years old

“Impoverished rice farmers around the world grow most of the world’s rice but make the shortest end of the stick. We thought it was about time someone did something about this,” say Kisum and Lincoln on their website Rice, Inc. The young men from Myanmar set out to help farmers by giving them industrial dryers and storage facilities. This helped in reducing rice wastage and also in adding to farmers’ yield and income.

Swietenia Puspa Lestari, 25 years old

Swietenia is the founder and executive director of Divers Clean Action, an Indonesian NGO that focuses on addressing debris in our seas. DCA has 1,500 volunteers across Southeast Asia. They collaborate with universities, coastal community development leaders, and diving institutions. They quote Albert Pike on their website: “What we do for ourselves dies with us, what we do for others and the world remains and is immortal.”

Mladen Jovanovic, 25 years old

Mladen — who hails from Australia — is the co-founder of Bindi Maps. According to their website, Bindi Maps “is a mobile app that locates users precisely in indoor spaces.” An audio system describes where users are, what is around them, and how to best get to their destination. Bindi App started as an app for the visually impaired. Soon, though, this could be an app for everyone. It makes people feel safe and secure to explore.

Anubha Maneshwar, 24 years old

Anubha is changing the landscape for women in India, and she is doing this through technology via her NGO GirlScript Foundation. “Let’s code for freedom,” it says on their website. GirlScript claims to be India’s biggest tech community. More than 50% of the over 60,000 students they have helped through online and offline training are women. They are working towards free tech education and skills training.

Tylor Jong, Jia Cai Lau, and Nicholas Lim, 27 years old

Screenshot from treedots.com

Tylor, Jia, and Nicholas of Singapore are the founders of TreeDots. TreeDots is a B2B app that aims to connect food or food ingredient suppliers with food business owners. These food business owners could be as big as restaurants and caterers to as small as food stalls. The app not only helps suppliers sell and buyers save money while getting what they need; it also saves tons of food from being thrown away and ending up in landfills.

They say “it takes a village,” but the movement of a village may start with one voice, even if it’s a young one. These young people show us that an idea that may change the world does not have to have blows and whistles. It just has to have a purpose and a heart for helping.

Now, these are influencers.
