Both full-time and part-time bloggers can have the income to support their lifestyles, but there have not always been clear-cut tips for filing blogging taxes. This blog is here to change that. If you make any money at all from your blog, you legally need to pay taxes as a blogger. Whether blogging is your full-time or part-time job, you will need to find the right tax form for your income.

The tricky part, or what can feel tricky, is getting into the YouTube Partner Program. The application process is actually quite simple once it is explained. 

Application

There is no formal written application, but better described as a process or checklist in which to complete it. Two goals that are a quick yes or no to tell you whether you should think about applying is,  

  1. 4000 hours of public watch time within a 12-month period
  2. 1000 YouTube subscribers

If you are low on those two numbers, you are not yet eligible to apply, but work hard to boost your numbers to meet those goals and you will be ready in no time. If you are at or above those goals, you can apply to earn money for your videos. 

In the left-hand corner of your YouTube Studio, you will see a monetization tab. Click that and start on your application. As I stated earlier, it isn’t a true application like you would normally think of the word. All this application involves is agreeing to YouTube’s terms and conditions. This is a standard procedure and setting up and connecting your Google AdSense account as one is required to be in the YouTube Partner Program. An AdSense account essentially makes it possible to display ads with your content on any platform. In this case, YouTube would need to connect the two to be able to have the option to show any advertisements with your videos to earn money. 

Timeline

Though the process of applying can be fairly quick, the reviewing process can take up to a month. The best course of action after applying is to continue making content for your page and review YouTube’s advertiser guidelines to know what is and what is not welcome in the YouTube Partner Program. If your page is rejected, the reasoning will most likely be in those guidelines. 

If YouTube does get back to you with admission, you will be able to start earning money off of your videos almost immediately. The YouTube Partner Program features more than one way to earn money through channel memberships and Super Chats. 

How Much Money Can You Actually Make? 

As you may guess, the amount of money earned as a part of the partner program varies from creator to creator. On average, a creator makes between $0.01 and $0.03 per view. The amount depends on several factors including how many views your content video attracts, the quality of clicks from those views, ad quality, video length, and more. With that, a video with over 1 million views potentially makes the creator over $5,000 for that one video. It all depends on the creator and their content.

When looking for a platform, there are many checkpoints to assess before completely diving in, but we are going to go over the platforms themselves today.

  1. WordPress 

WordPress has two different platforms. WordPress.org is the original WordPress where there are endless avenues of customization and growth due to it being a self-hosted blog site. WordPress.com is much more affordable, but you won’t have access to all of the plugins and further customization. To make money from your blog, WordPress.org will be your best bet because you can make it your own and have it fully curated for your business as you have your own domain and hosting plan. Prices can vary, but overall it is very affordable for what you are investing to have a platform like WordPress house your business.

Owned by Google, Blogger is great for bloggers who aren’t ready to invest in a higher-end platform, but still want to test the waters and make some money. Since it is owned by Google, it is easily integrated with Google Analytics and Paypal, as well as many others. With Blogger being a free platform, you are getting what you pay for. It is limited with the customization and you will typically have a domain name that is not personal. You can buy your own domain name and link it if that’s something that is more important to you. 

  • Wix

Wix is another incredibly popular blogging and website platform because of its ease of use. The drag-and-drop function makes it seamless to create a website from scratch without having to figure out how to code if you don’t have any previous experience. The pros to Wix are its user-friendly design and the ability to get started quickly since there is less of a learning curve than on other sites. There is a free plan with Wix, but to have more bells and whistles, plans start at around $18 for the year. The downfall of Wix will come later due to the customization and growth obstacles. Though it is a great beginner site, you may not be able to achieve as much growth as you would with other platforms. 

  • Squarespace

A great option for large websites, Squarespace can support up to 1000 pages and has a functional app. Plans start at about $12 a month. You’ll have everything you need to run a successful blog where you have the opportunity to support ads. Their dashboard has a bit of a learning curve. But it still doesn’t require any coding knowledge and is very user-friendly once you get used to it. Notably great for small businesses, Squarespace would be a good option to make money from your blog

  • Weebly

With the drag-and-drop option, Weebly is very similar to Wix. Weebly is more limited in its customization. It also has an editor which takes any pressure off of the owner. All of the plans are very affordable, starting at only $6 and topping out at $26. They also have a function to keep your progress if you decide to change themes within the platform.

Thus, more than ever, multiple streams of income are necessary. Because of uncertainties about what the future holds, it’s best to have a source of income for bills, a source of income for insurance, and a source of income for emergencies.

While scientists are still studying the behavior of coronavirus inside the body and a vaccine has yet to be released, people are opting to over-react and stay home. Some have started home-based businesses, home-based work, or their own blogs.

So how can you have a blog that makes money?

1. Having CPC or CPM ads

These are the two most popular types of ads that help bloggers make money:

  • CPC (Cost Per Click) or PPC (Pay Per Click) ads – Usually banners placed within the content or sidebar. Each time a reader clicks on the ad, the blogger gets paid for the click.

The truth is, as long as you can write somewhat coherently and you have something interesting to say, you can write a blog. If you can’t write coherently but you still have something interesting to say, consider vlogging, which is a way to say “video blogging.” If you can’t write coherently and you don’t want to be on camera but you still have something to say, there’s always podcasting.

Literature

That being said, if you have a background in literature or in English, you might have a head start. You’ll be used to writing papers, self-editing, self-proofreading, and reading for comprehension. You should be able to read news, analyze it, and comment on it. Your allusion game should be pretty spot-on, too. (For those rusty on literary terms, an allusion is “an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it specifically.”)

Will your blog necessarily cover the finer intricacies of Chaucer, Shakespeare, or Cheever? It doesn’t need to! Remember that the background of the blogger doesn’t necessarily need to translate to the subject matter she blogs about. A journalist could become a blogger without skipping a beat, and most formal journalism study at the college/university level is designed to teach students to adapt to reporting in a digital format. They teach you how to be a journalist across all platforms including, yes, blogs. 

That being said, just like the English literature major doesn’t need to start a blog about modern realism in the short story, a journalist need not blog about current events. Journalists, too, have hobbies. It’s just that sometimes that hobby is: more journalism.

There’s something about the training to become an attorney that churns out some pretty great–to say nothing of prolific–writers. Think of John Grisham and David Baldacci. Maybe it’s all the research you’re required to do and all the briefs you’re required to write. Analytical thinking is drilled into the student’s brain.
